Blessings of The Commandments

The Lord has declared that  “If ye love me, keep my commandments” ( John 14:15). There are many other scriptures that say the same thing. But why do we have Commandments from God? What is the Purpose?  Many would say that they are restrictive, or there are just too many.  Let’s take a look at why the Lord has set up commandments to follow, and how they are blessing to us.

“ And the Lord commanded us to do all these statutes, to fear the Lord our God, for our good always, that he might preserve us alive, as it is at this” (Deuteronomy 6:24). Our Heavenly  Father has given us Commandments to protect us from physical and spiritual danger. Heavenly Father knew that there would be things that would harm us. They fore warn us.  They give us specific things to watch out for, specific warnings, things to stay away from. They are a road maps that will direct us away from, or around things that will hinder our spiritual growth, and bring us physical and emotional pain. When thinking about the Commandments we must know that, although they have temporal, or Physical benefits, they must be looked at from an eternal perspective.  ”Behold, I gave unto him that he should be an agent unto himself; and I gave unto him commandment, but no temporal commandment gave I unto him, for my commandments are spiritual; they are not natural nor temporal, neither carnal nor sensual”  ( D&C 29:35) God gave the commandments so we would know how to be spiritually clean, so we could return to live with him again, that is his whole purpose in all that he does,  “For behold, this is my work and my glory—to bring to pass the immortality and eternal life of man” ( Moses 1:39). That is his priority. The temporal blessings that come from the following the Commandments are secondary, but nevertheless blessings from God.  Following the Commandments have brought me so many blessings in my life, They have brought me so much happiness. I know that if we all commit to keeping the commandments we can all receive the blessings that god wants to give us. “And when we obtain any blessing from God, it is by obedience to that law upon which it is predicated” ( D&C 130: 21).
“And moreover, I would desire that ye should consider on the blessed and happy state of those that keep the commandments of God. For behold, they are blessed in all things, both temporal and spiritual; and if they hold out faithful to the end they are received into heaven, that thereby they may dwell with God in a state of never-ending happiness. O remember, remember that these things are true; for the Lord God hath spoken it.
